SAN ANTONIO -

Bexar County’s first Baby Moses, now 10 years old, was all over the playground at San Pedro Park on Wednesday.

“I feel so lucky to have him because he is one of the happiest people I’ve ever met,” said Susan Smylie, now a single parent about her  adopted son Matthew.

She said his birth mother had named him Ethan -- that’s now his middle name -- before going from the hospital to Fire Station 41, where she handed over her newborn son to medical personnel, as required by the Baby Moses Law.

A foster parent at the time, Smylie said a friend called her after seeing the story on the news.

“'I think it’s your baby.' Those were her exact words,” Smylie said.

She said three days later, Matthew Ethan became one of the family. Smylie has three other children, including an adopted daughter.

After learning the first Baby Moses in years had been turned over last week at another local fire station, Smylie said she grew concerned a new generation of desperate young women may not be aware of the law adopted in 2002.

“You can’t just leave them in a box on the doorstep,” Smylie said.

She said babies must be healthy and relinquished within 60 days of birth, no questions asked, unless the mother is willing to provide a family medical history.

Smylie also said Matthew is proof there is no shame in making a courageous decision.

“I have nothing but respect for recognizing that they’re not ready to be parents and they want their child to have the best options in life,” Smylie said.

Smylie said Matthew is home schooled, loves sports and dreams playing with the Dallas Cowboys.

“He’s fine with it,” Smylie said, adding she hopes that someday perhaps Matthew will get to meet his birth mother, if she’s willing.

A grateful Smylie said, “I wonder how she’s doing and hope things are okay with her.”

As for Matthew, Smylie asked him, “Are you like the happiest kid around?”

He said, “Probably!”
