A Bexar County sheriff’s deputy was shot twice around 6:15 pm Tuesday while serving multiple warrants at a home on the 11000 block of Dublin Place.

Deputy Jose Esquivel, 49, was one of five deputies attempting to arrest Juan Daniel Gonzales, Jr., 35, when Sheriff Susan Pamerleau said Gonzales opened fire.

“The suspect was hiding in a laundry room and as our officer came around the corner, the suspect them fired on our officer hitting him twice,” said Pamerleau.

Esquivel was hit in the upper torso. That’s when Pamerleau said a second deputy was able to subdue the suspect.

It's unclear if that deputy fired any shots at Gonzales, but Pamerleau said he was not wounded by gunfire. Gonzales was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

Paul Berry, BCSO Public Information Officer, said a man and a woman who were also in the home were taken into custody.

As the man was being put into a patrol car, he said, “I just rented him a room.”

The home was a place where several people rented rooms, according to neighbors and one man who rented one of those rooms but said he did not know Gonzales.

Berry said the deputies arrived at the home and knocked on the door to announce why they were there, but no one answered and the door was unlocked.

“Our deputies first came in and they asked ‘where is Gonzales, where is Gonzales,’” Berry said. “They were not helpful and that’s one of the reasons they were taken into custody.”

Gonzales, who is a registered sex offender, was wanted on seven felony warrants which include five for felony theft, one for retaliation, and one for violation of the sex offender registration statute.

He will now be charged with attempted capital murder.

Esquivel, a 28-year-veteran of the force, was taken to University Hospital. Berry said he was alert and talking after he was wounded.
