San Antonio police have identified the victim of a fatal accident that appeared to be the result of street racing.
Investigators said 17-year-old Gabriela Lerma died as a result of the accident that happened just before noon Tuesday on the Loop 1604 access road near Hausman Road.
Three other teens, including the 18-year-old driver, were in the car with Lerma, they were all students at Brandeis High School.
Sisters Bianca and Brianna Chapa said they have many fond memories of the carefree days they spent with Gabby Lerma.
"She would get in the car with a big smile and turn the music up and dance and just always having a great time," Brianna Chapa said.
Bianca Chapa said she first met Lerma last year when they played softball together on the Brandeis team. She said they became fast friends.
"She was just a really nice person and everyone loved her and she was just a great person to be around," Bianca Chapa said.
Investigators believe the students left campus to grab lunch. On the way back to school, the driver of the car reportedly tried to race another vehicle. The driver lost control when he tried to pass a truck on the left side that was making a left turn.
Lerma died at the scene, two teenage girls and the 18-year-old driver were transported to University Hospital with serious injuries.
Brianna Chapa said she saw the aftermath of the horrible accident as she left campus to grab lunch. She never imagined her friend was involved in the crash.
"We were just in shock and everyone immediately put their seat belts on real fast because we got scared and we were just like let's pray for the people in that car that they made it," Chapa said.
The sisters described a very sad scene inside the halls of Brandeis as students learned the news. They said the accident has given them all a new appreciation for life.
"It's just like a wake-up call to like be careful and live every day to the fullest," Bianca Chapa said.
The teens hope the accident will be a reminder to other teens to be more careful.
"It's just an eye opener that we never know what's going to happen so just forgive everyone and move forward," Brianna Chapa said.
Investigators are still trying to locate the other car that was involved in the street race that led up to the accident.
NISD said it will have grief counselors at the Brandeis campus on Wednesday to help students deal with their emotions.
