SAN ANTONIO -

County commissioners approved a 90-day burn ban for Bexar County Tuesday. The policy goes into effect Wednesday.

Commissioners unanimously passed the measure in Tuesday's meeting.

The ban only affects open fires within county limits, however, meaning that residents must now burn trash or other items within a barrel with a mesh lid over top.

The goal is to prevent fires from easily sparking in brush and shrubbery made dry by excessive summer heat.

The ban will not affect fireworks, however. Sales are being allowed outside of San Antonio city limits, and customers will be allowed to light up their purchases outside of city limits as well.

This time last year, a fireworks ban forced sellers to shut down popular stands, and people were not allowed to shoot off fireworks due to excessive drought.
