CR survey: Costco top store
Costco came out on top when Consumer Reports surveyed more then 26,000 readers about their shopping experiences at some major chain retailers.
Retailers are increasingly one-stop shops for consumers wanting to buy everything from shoes to appliances to jewelry.
Consumer Reports asked its readers about quality, selection, value, customer service and how easy it was to check out.
Stores rated were big-box giants Walmart, Target and K-Mart, along with department stores Macy's JC Penney, Sears and Kohl's, and warehouse clubs Costco and Sam's Club.
"The biggest complaints we got about walk-in stores were long lines, lack of sales help and out-of-stock items," said Consumer Reports' Kim Kleman.
Walmart got the lowest rating for customer service.
When it came to find a bargain, K-Mart came up short. Shoppers said they got a better value at Costco and Kohl's.
Overall, Costco came out on top, followed by Koh'ls and JC Penney.
Costco was the only store to get an outstanding grade for overall quality of merchandise whether in the store or online.
Costco's website is not just for members. Non-members can shop there if they pay an extra five percent of the purchase price.
The biggest complaint about Costco was long lines at checkout in the stores.
