Campers threatened at Brackenridge Park
Camper says they were physically threatened at park
About a dozen parks around the city have been busy with campers since the city lifted it's curfew for the Easter holiday on Thursday.
However, some campers at Brackenridge Park said Friday that they were scared to stay after several altercations on the grounds.
Eric Barragan said he and his wife were looking forward to enjoying their first Easter as a married couple at Brackenridge Park, but Barragan said they were caught off guard Friday afternoon when someone physically threatened them.
"She's out here talking to that lady. I'm like, 'What's going on?'" said Barragan. "And, they're like, 'You can't be here, that's why we have our chair chained here.' But park police said we could have that spot because we are physically here."
The issue is over some picnic areas around the park.
Campers said this year, park police have told them that they physically have to be at a site to reserve it and that people just can't mark a table off by chaining a chair to it.
"The park police say you have to be physically present, seated here at this chair or at this table," said Gloria Romance, one of the campers. "If you are not, that is not your spot."
Romance said she and her family had witnessed some of the altercations, which have all been over camp sites.
"It's kind of scary because we do have a family here, and this is a family environment," said Romance. "We are trying to keep our kids safe."
Jackie Barragan said she actually thought about leaving.
"We're newlyweds and we came out here to have fun and everything, and we didn't expect to get our lives threatened," said Barragan. "It's like I told my husband, I don't want to die over a spot."
KSAT contacted park police headquarters on Friday night to clarify what the rules are out at Brackenridge, but our KSAT crews were told to contact Parks and Recreation Department, which is closed over the Easter holiday.
