Family, friends, and neighbors of Josiah Williams held a candlelight vigil Saturday outside the home where the five-year-old boy was found dead Thursday.

“He touched everybody's heart,” said Josiah’s aunt Sylvia Balleca. “He was beautiful as you can tell in these pictures. He was a beautiful boy.”

Since Thursday, neighbors have added stuffed animals and pictures of Josiah to a makeshift memorial outside the boy’s home. He lived in the 3900 block of Gayle Avenue with his biological father, Charleston Williams, and stepmother, Crystal Williams. The couple was arrested Friday after an autopsy of the boy’s body revealed signs of neglect, abuse and malnutrition, authorities said. They are each facing one count of Injury to a Child.

As they were being transported to the Bexar County Jail Friday, the pair offered apologies for the boy’s death. Family members said, at this moment, they could not forgive the couple.

“My nephew didn’t deserve what he got,” said Rachel Ojeda, another of Josiah’s aunts. “He (Charleston Williams) could have protected his son. He was his father, and if somebody was hurting him he should have protected him. The sorry came too late.”

Josiah’s grandfather, Martin Balleca, said he’s going to let the legal system run its course before judging the couple, but he had harsh words for his grandson’s father and suspected killer.

“He just wanted people to feel sorry for him. He didn’t feel sorry for his son,” Balleca said. “He's trying to say he didn’t know that was going on. (That is) a bunch of crap to tell you the truth.”

Funeral arrangements for Josiah Williams are pending.
