Car burglars have left people at the Toscana at Sonterra Apartments cleaning up a big mess and feeling a bit less secure in their gated Stone Oak neighborhood.
San Antonio police suspect there were two waves of car break-ins at the complex in the 19700 block of Stone Oak Parkway between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
An officer at the scene said he had identified at least four to five vehicles that had their windows broken out and items stolen from inside.
“They took my lap top. They took one of my fiancee’s bags,” said Brandon Dial. “I mean, obviously, they were just grabbing because there were just CDs in the bag.”
Instead of going forward with his normal morning plans, Dial spent time on the telephone with his insurance company, trying to figure out how to undo the damage to his company car.
Now, in hindsight, he wonders if the strange noises he heard overnight might’ve been the criminals at work.
“I thought I heard thunder or something,” Dial said. “But some other girl said she heard car alarms or something. I don't know why anybody didn't see anything more than that."
For Jaker Paraoan, the ordeal turned out to be more of a headache than anything else.
The burglars shattered his passengers side window and mirror, but didn’t touch his GPS system or the bags he had in his back seat.
“Just a whole lot of damage,” he said. “(They took) nothing big because I don't really keep stuff in here."
An officer at the scene said both Paraoan and Dial appear to be victims of a second wave of burglars that hit at some time after 11 p.m. He said officers had responded to another report of car break-ins at the complex around 9 p.m. and made some arrests.
The victims said the damage wasn’t done to their vehicles until after the arrests were made.
Both residents said they had received a written warning about car burglaries from the apartment complex about six months ago.
Now, they said they will closely heed it, by keeping their valuables close to them.
The management at Toscana at Sonterra did not immediately respond to a request for additional information.
