SAN ANTONIO -

Career criminal Alias Trevino, 24, is back behind bars on a car burglary charge, thanks to the would-be victim and his son who fought back.

San Antonio police arrested Trevino early Wednesday morning at his mother’s home in the 2100 block of El Jardin Road on San Antonio’s West side.

According to a police report, he had run from officers who were trying to track him down after an interrupted car burglary at another home nearby.

Roberto Alejos said he and his 26-year-old son woke up after 11 p.m. Tuesday to the sound of their dogs barking.

Alejos said his son looked outside and saw someone in their pickup, which was parked in their driveway in the 900 block of SW 36th Street.

“He saw that the door was open all the way and he screamed at him, 'Hey, what are you doing in the truck?'" Alejos said.

His son chased the man about a block, then ordered him back to the home at knifepoint to wait for police, Alejos said.

Instead of waiting calmly, though, Trevino tried to make a break for it, he said, but was momentarily stopped in his tracks.

"He started charging at me, and when he came charging at me, that's when I hit him in the face because I used to box,” Alejos said.

The 60-year-old husband and father, who was an amateur boxer until he lost a leg in a car crash, said he still has some of his old skills, and gave Trevino a right hook to the jaw.

The suspect’s mug shot shows signs of that powerful punch, a bruised left jaw.

But Alejos said Trevino was only stopped briefly and managed to run away.

When police tracked him down a few hours later, they recovered other items they suspect were stolen, the police report stated.

Records show Trevino has been arrested at least 20 times since 2005, including five other arrests for vehicle burglary.

The suspect’s mother, Isabel Trevino, spoke about the incident from her home Thursday morning.

She said her son has had a hard life and steals because no one will hire him with his criminal history.

“I do not think it’s right, what he does,” she said. “He never got any kind of help since he was a little boy. He was real little when he went to (juvenile detention).”

Isabel Trevino admitted that she was with her son Tuesday night when he allegedly burglarized Alejos’ truck, although she said she tried to stop him.

According to the police report, an unnamed woman with Alias Trevino was, in fact, detained by police.

However, it does not appear any charges were filed against her.

Alejos said it’s time for Alias Trevino, who seemingly has never spent more than a year behind bars, to serve a long prison sentence.

The career criminal’s mother agrees, but for a different reason.

“He’s safer in there than out here doing this,” said Isabel Trevino. “He could’ve been killed.”
