A 19-year-old man was hospitalized after he lost control of his car and it plunged nearly 50 feet off the North Star Mall parking garage.
Police were called to the parking lot of North Star Mall in the 100 block of Rector around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, and found the car lying upside down.
The driver, Johnroy Barrones, was the only person in the car and was taken to University Hospital. He was listed in stable condition early Wednesday morning.
San Antonio police determined Barrones was racing another man on the fifth level of the garage and doing donuts with his car before the accident.
"Obviously, it was a bad idea. You saw the end results," Matt Porter, public information officer with the San Antonio police department, said. "No. 1, we're lucky that the individual didn't lose his life as a result of the accident. No. 2, that vehicle could have fallen on another vehicle. It could have fallen on pedestrians walking in that area."
Investigators said the driver of the other vehicle stayed at the scene. San Antonio police have not said if he will face charges.
Several people stopped to look at the damaged garage Wednesday morning, and some people even took pictures of it.
"It's truly amazing that he survived it. It's a miracle that he survived it," Nora Castro said. "Young people don't understand the consequences behind their thrills, and it's really tragic."
