The search is on for a carjacking suspect who took off with a couple’s car -- and their 2-year-old child in the backseat.
It happened on Saturday at the Speedy Cash Loan store on Fredericksburg.
The couple had gone inside for a loan, leaving their car running and their child in the car.
The thief then jumped into the driver's seat and drove away, with both parents chasing the SUV on foot.
Police said the baby was found safely about 10 minutes later outside of a thrift store after the thief dropped him off.
The stolen SUV was found abandoned a short time later on a nearby street.
Police said they don’t believe the suspect had any idea about the child in the backseat until he was already driving away.
“The lesson here, however, is that parents bear certain responsibilities,” said Balcones Heights police Chief Henry Dominguez. “These parents should have never left their child unattended for one second, and now they could be facing charges of neglect.”
Anyone with information about the carjacking suspect is asked to call Balcones Heights police.
