A man suspected of stabbing a child held a Houston SWAT team at bay Friday before committing suicide, investigators said.

Houston police the man got into an altercation with the mother of a 4-year-old girl Friday morning.

The man ended up stabbing the child in the neck, police said.

The man fled the scene and officers pulled his car over, police said. The man bailed out of a car and barricaded himself inside his patio home on West Airport near McClain.

Detectives said the man was armed and one shot was fired.

About two hours into the ordeal, the man fatally shot himself, police said. His name has not been released.

The 4-year-old girl was taken to Texas Children's Hospital and is expected to recover.

Detectives have not said if the suspect was related to the child.
