Cibolo BBQ joint goes up in smoke
Harmon’s Barbecue racing to fill customer orders for Thanksgiving turkeys
A barbecue restaurant in downtown Cibolo was heavily damaged by flames and smoke early Tuesday morning.
The fire has turned up the heat on Ron Ruiz, the owner of Harmon's Barbecue, as he tries to recover from the damage and still fill orders for Thanksgiving turkeys.
"We going to try to get up and running as soon as possible," Ruiz said. "It's nothing that we not going to be able to fix."
Ruiz was confident his barbecue and catering business would bounce back after the fire caused considerable damage.
Investigators told him it looked like an electrical problem sparked the fire in the kitchen area and then spread to the dining room.
On Tuesday, Ruiz was in a race against the clock. He had about 60 orders for Thanksgiving turkey's to fill by Wednesday and he planned to smoke every last bird.
"Our smoker is still operational and you guys will still be able to get your turkeys out for Thanksgiving without interrupting your Thanksgiving at all," Ruiz said.
Restoration crews were already cleaning up the mess next door at Wise Choice Jewelers.
Owner Kim Wise said it's mostly smoke and soot but it will keep her closed for the busy shopping weekend.
"It's a real inconvenience. I got weddings. I got Christmas presents. I've got 10 rings I got to do so hopefully we'll be ready by Monday," Wise said.
Wise credited the Cibolo fire fighters and the construction of the old brick building for saving both businesses.
"Thank God we have old buildings because there's double brick walls or it would have spread throughout," Wise said.
While it wasn't a good start to the holiday season, both owners were thankful they still have businesses and they plan to work hard to keep their customers happy.
"We're going to get you're guys turkeys out for Thanksgiving," Ruiz said. "We'll have to work a little harder this year but we going to get them out."
If you are one of the customers waiting for a turkey from Harmon's you can give Ron Ruiz a call to check up on the status of your turkey. His number is 210-336-6808.
