Cibolo man shot 3 times by former co-worker
Shooter kills self after confrontation
A Cibolo man suffered multiple gunshot wounds Friday morning after a former co-worker showed up at his home and began firing.
Cibolo police said Robert Merrick was in his car preparing to leave for work when the shooter pulled into his driveway.
“I waved at him and he pulled a gun out and started shooting at me,” Merrick said. “He was aiming for my head the entire time.”
Merrick managed to drive away as the shooter continued to fire. The 38-year-old was hit twice in the neck and once in the leg.
“The first shot knocked me forward and the second one just kind of dug a trench in my neck and it was two centimeters from my spinal cord.”
Bloodied, Merrick drove himself to the Cibolo police station.
From there he was transported to the San Antonio Military Medical Center. He was treated and released Friday afternoon.
Merrick told investigators the two men had a history at their former job.
“We understand there was a problem that occurred several months ago,” said Cibolo police Chief Gary Cox.”Mr. Merrick believes this former co-worker held a grudge and came there this morning to act upon that.”
Cox said the shooter's body was later found in a Cibolo park Friday morning. He said it appeared the man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Just hours after the frightening ordeal, Merrick was in disbelief that he was able to survive the attack.
“I can't believe I’m standing here right now,” he said. “Honestly, I should be dead.”
