City Council gets first look at bond proposal

      SAN ANTONIO -

The San Antonio City council got its first look Wednesday at a $595 million dollar bond proposal that includes money for street improvements, parks, facilities, and community initiatives.

The bond package was put together by a total of 120 citizens appointed to various committees by the mayor and city council, after a total of 20 community meetings between October and December of 2011.

The bond package includes $340 million for streets and bridges, $130 million for projects to improve drainage, $65 million for parks, and $61 million for facilities and community initiatives.

Among the big ticket items, $30 million is allocated for a new interchange at Loop 1604 and Highway 281, $40 million for downtown street reconstruction, $30 million for reconstruction of Hausman road from Loop 1604 to I-10, $23 million for bridge replacement,  and $15 million for the redevelopment of Hemisfair Park.

At Wednesday’s B-Session meeting, Councilwoman Elisa Chan and Councilman Reed Williams requested that specific language be added to ensure no money from the bond package would be used to fund street car projects.

The city council will have the opportunity to make changes to the proposal at its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, and is expected to vote on a final bond proposal, which will be sent to voters in May.
