City, county have no Toyota trucks from SA plant

SAN ANTONIO -

The City of San Antonio and Bexar County have thousands of vehicles in their fleets paid for by taxpayers, but none of those vehicles were built at the South Side Toyota plant.

Local leaders were glowing eight and a half years ago as ground was broken on the Toyota plant. They praised the car company for bringing so many jobs to town.

Despite that, there are no Toyota trucks with city or county logos. Plenty of Toyota Priuses have been purchased, but no trucks.

Jorge Perez is the city's Director of Building and Equipment Services, the department that purchases vehicles. He said the city is not against Toyota. "Absolutely not," Perez said. "We welcome Toyota."

He said the city has a legitimate need for compact and full size trucks and has 324 such vehicles on the fleet, but no Toyotas.

He said the problem is that no Toyota dealers have chosen to submit a bid.

"The bids are open," Perez said. "The Toyota dealerships have opted not to bid."

The county does not have any Tundras or Tacomas either, but the question sparked an examination into why.

County Purchasing Agent Ben Garza said Toyota trucks may soon be rolling with county logos.

"The main items or vehicles that we have been purchasing are Ford F-150s and (Chevy) Tahoes," Garza said.

Garza has now found out the county can buy Toyota trucks on a co-op basis, making them eligible for purchase by county departments.

He said before the question was brought up, department heads simply did not know they were an affordable choice.

"We will educate our departments and offices and let them know they do have options," Garza said.

He said that means the county could be buying Toyota trucks from South Texas in the future.

The county's Vehicle Replacement Committee recommends which vehicles should be bought and sold.

A list of proposed purchases is brought before commissioners court for final approval.
