SAN ANTONIO -

The City of San Antonio kicked off its series of wellness screenings Tuesday for city employees.

The screenings are part of the city's continuing health-related initiatives to improve the wellness of its employees. The screenings will give employees important information about their cholesterol and glucose levels, as well as blood pressure.

By promoting wellness, the city also hopes to reduce costs to taxpayers.

"The City of San Antonio spends about $110 million each year on health insurance for more than 11,000 employees," said City Manager Sheryl Sculley. "So it's very important to us that we keep our costs as low as possible, and we do that by having healthy employees."

Sculley also hosts the City Manager's Step Up To Wellness 5K Run/Walk, which is set to take place on Saturday, Feb. 23, at SeaWorld.
