Former San Antonio City Councilman Philip Cortez defeated political newcomer Tina Torres for the Democratic nomination for the State Rep. District 117 seat.
With 100 percent of the vote counted, Cortez captured 1,800 votes or 57 percent of the vote compared to 1,360 votes or 43 percent for Torres.
Cortez said the possibility of representing his family and friends in the Legislature is important to him.
"I have family here, and if I win the nomination, I will possibly represent them in Austin. My own family, my own friends that I've known my whole life," Cortez said.
Torres said she has no regrets about running for office.
"I do feel very positive. I've made many new friendships, and I expect to continue those friendships. So it's all good," Torres said.
Cortez will face Republican John Garza in November.
