County breaks ground on new soccer complex
New complex to be run be local non-profit group
Bexar County officials Friday broke ground on a new youth soccer complex that will serve south Bexar County.
The Mission City Youth Soccer Complex will be located at Loop 1604 between Interstate 37 and Highway 281. Precinct One County Commissioner Sergio "Chico" Rodriguez said he is excited to see work begin on the complex.
“The southern portion of my precinct is growing rapidly and I am so proud that it will be the home of the Mission City Youth Soccer Complex," Rodrgiuez said.
The complex will have eight full size soccer fields that will be fully lit and among the eight fields will be a championship field that will seat 1,000 spectators and include a scoreboard.
“The players of Mission Soccer play on great fields at other sites and think, ‘Why not us?’” MCYSO President Jose Martinez said in a statement. "And with this complex, it is us."
The $5 million complex is one of 13 amateur sports projects funded by the county's Community Venues Program. Funding for the program comes from a combination of the car rental tax, a hotel occupancy tax and a short term motor vehicle tax.
The county said the new complex will allow the Mission City Youth Soccer Organization to grow its membership and host tournaments. The organization serves up to 600 players a year and attract 500 new players with the complex.
