Couple caught on roof of Bexar County Courthouse
Two people were arrested early Tuesday morning after police caught them on the roof of the Bexar County Courthouse.
Patrick Merrigan, 23, and Mikaela Elkerton, 21, have been charged with public intoxication.
A security monitor at the courthouse captured the couple on the fire escape around 4:20 a.m. when an alarm sounded.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said the courthouse is secure.
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened.
A similar incident occurred on Oct. 19, 2011, when five men were arrested at the courthouse.
Two men in the group were able to get inside the building and were seen on surveillance wearing sombreros and waving a gavel in the air.
Lt. Roy Fletcher, with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, covers court security. He said there is a security officer at the courthouse 24 hours a day, and when the fire escape ladder came down Tuesday morning -- and back in October -- an alarm alerted security.
“We have a security system in place that has detected all of these break-ins," he said. "This particular incident, not later than 10 minutes, we were on the scene responding to the incident."
A fire safety consultant is looking at ways to improve security at the courthouse while keeping the building safe in emergencies, but hasn’t made recommendations yet.
