Crime Stoppers offers reward in fatal hit-and-run
Hortencia Esquivel was found in a ditch along IH-35
Police are asking for the public’s help with identifying the driver of a pickup truck involved in a hit and run accident that claimed the life of 27-year-old Hortencia Esquivel.
The crash occurred along IH-35 South between Highway 16S and Somerset Road at about 9:45 p.m Sunday. Police said Esquivel was last seen walking past the Kelly Heights Apartment complex on her way home from Chili’s restaurant.
Esquivel’s body was found lying in a ditch 300 yards past the apartment complex at 5:58 a.m.
“There's so many unanswered questions,” said Hortencia’s cousin, Narzisa Muniz. “Exactly when it happened, why didn't this person stop? Who can leave somebody just lying on the ground?”
Muniz said Hortencia was a single mother, who was born in Mexico, and worked hard to support herself and her three children.
Her kids now know their mother is gone, but it's the questions that remain unanswered that are the most difficult to cope with.
“We just want some kind of comfort, and peace of mind, to be able and close this chapter and move on," said Muniz. “Allow us the opportunity to forgive you, and give God the opportunity to forgive you, and just give us something, please. Give us something.”
Authorities said that evidence collected at the scene shows that the driver was in a gray or silver 1999-2003 Chevy or GMC 1500 pickup extra cab truck with a black toolbox. Investigators suspect that the crash damaged the right headlight, headlight trim, engine hood and the right front quarter panel.
San Antonio Crime Stoppers said it will pay for information leading to an arrest. Anonymous tips can be provided by calling 224-STOP (224-7867). Tips can be sent via text message to CRIMES (274637).
