Local law enforcement agencies are cracking down on drunk drivers. They want to keep them off the road especially during Fiesta.
One San Antonio police officer knows firsthand, just how dangerous drunk drivers can be. He was nearly killed by one.
“(The drunk driver) took my leg off, my right leg off, right before the right knee about two inches below the right knee,” said Officer Michael Thornton.
Thornton is now on a mission to get drunk drivers off the road. He believes ,“more importantly it's completely 100% avoidable there's no excuse for it… there's the RUI program riding under the influence we'll try to get you and your car home for free .”
Officer Thornton was one of several officers who was at the multi-agency DWI Roll Call at Alamo Plaza Wednesday night. With Fiesta upon us, law enforcement are ramping up their efforts to keep the highways and streets safe of drunk drivers.
Last year, more than 6,000 DWI arrests were made in Bexar County. With his wife and kids by his side, Officer Thornton says he’s just glad the drunk driver who hit him didn’t take his life.
“I'm not angry at drunk drivers, I'm not mad at anybody. I’m not even mad at the gentleman who hit me cause then my life would be consumed with hate , then I wouldn't be a good husband, father or police man,” said Thornton.
