Daniel Leone, 23, is the second man arrested by San Antonio police in connection with this summer’s Costco jewelry heist.
Leone was arrested Wednesday on a theft charge, two days after police arrested Dustin Ammons, 30, in connection with the same crime.
Police believe that together, Leone and Ammons pulled off a major jewelry heist, stealing more than $120,000 worth of jewelry and watches from Costco on UTSA Boulevard.
"They caught the wrong guy,” Leone told reporters as he was led out of police headquarters early Thursday. “It's a mistake they make somewhat often. It's OK. My lawyer's very good."
Police, though, seem confident that they have collared the right people.
The arrest affidavit stated that someone entered the building that houses Costco by bending back a metal sheet on a side wall, then used a BB gun to shatter a glass display case. It stated the suspects were able to avoid motion detectors by breaking the glass that way.
Detectives later obtained surveillance video from a Northside jewelry store showing Ammons attempting, unsuccessfully, to sell a diamond ring worth more than $13,000, the affidavit stated.
They said they also learned that Leone had better luck.
The affidavit stated that detectives executing a search warrant at Ammons’ home found pawn shop receipts showing Leone had sold some of the jewelry for about $4,700.
They said they found records through an online database showing he also made sales to jewelry stores in Houston, the affidavit stated.
"I'm innocent and you will see after time that I will be released," Leone said.
