Dirty nails, margarita mixer lead to failing scores

SAN ANTONIO -

Dirt under an employee's fingernails and a dirty margarita machine are a few of the things health inspectors found at a San Antonio restaurant and a neighborhood bar and grill.

Mi Rancho Restaurant is located off South Zarzamora on the West Side.
Metro Health handed them a failing score of 33 demerits earlier this month. Their violations included:

  • Cooked food not safely cooled down for storage.
  • The inspector spotted dirt under an employee's fingernails.
  • Food handlers weren't using gloves or hand sanitizer.
  • The staff was told to clean dirty peelers, ovens and stove tops.

Several violations were corrected immediately. Mi Rancho was given a deadline to fix everything else but the inspector did not schedule a follow-up visit.

Highlander Bar & Grill on Fredericksburg Road failed their latest inspection with 33 demerits. Their violations included:

  • Inadequate hand washing.
  • Foods weren't stored in packages or covered containers.
  • Their microwave, margarita machine and soda dispenser needed to be cleaned.
  • The entire bar area including tables and shelves needed cleaning as well.

An assistant manager tells KSAT's Behind the Kitchen Door their troubles are tied to high employee turnover. He says they've fixed what was wrong and better days are ahead now that everyone is on board. The inspector stops by again this week.

The following businesses just earned perfect scores from Metro Health:

  • Cracker Barrel on Interstate 10 near Huebner.
  • Griff's Burger Bar on Pleasanton Road.
  • Jerry's Chicago Style Hot Dogs downtown on East Commerce.
  • Mya's Tex-Mex Cafe on Culebra.
  • Wingstop on South Zarzamora.
