Distribution of Girl Scout cookies begins
More than 1 million boxes to be distributed across South Texas
The first Girl Scout cookies of the season were distributed Wednesday afternoon.
Girl Scout troupe leaders arrived in minivans and SUVs to receive crates of cookies from the Girl Scout cookie distribution center in San Antonio.
Troupe leader Andreia Figueroa was picking up 250 cases.
"That’s about 2,600 cookie boxes,” she said.
So many, that Figueroa opted to rent a U-Haul to transport the highly sought after snacks.
Troupe leader Tina Bailey did not have enough room in her minivan for all of her orders.
"I’ll be back tomorrow for my other troupe," vowed Bailey.
"We are about to distribute 1.3 million boxes of Girl Scout cookies between today and Saturday," said Rose Gonzales, CEO of Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas.
Those millions of cookies are stacked to the ceiling inside a giant warehouse in northeast San Antonio.
The famous cookies will be distributed over the next few days to a 21-county area.
This year, the boxes have taken on a new design, but the favorites remain the same.
While orders will be delivered next week, the Girl Scouts will be manning storefronts starting Feb. 8. The cost of a box is $3.50.
A Girl Scout App is also available to help customers get their cookie-fix.
"That’ll be able to tell you the closest Girl Scout booth sale closest to your neighborhood or your workplace,” said Gonzales.
The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girl-led business in the country and generates $790 million for girls and communities nation-wide.
