District 25 Republican candidates debate
Wentworth, Jones, Campbell go head to head
District 25 Republican candidates debate
The District 25 Texas Senate race for the Republican nomination remains contested as incumbent Jeff Wentworth faces two opponents. The three met Wednesday for a debate in front on San Antonio business leaders.
During the debate, seven-term senator Jeff Wentworth made experience a major point of emphasis.
"If you live in senate District 25, I’m your senator, and I've been working for you," said Wentworth.
"If you want somebody who's been there and been there, vote for them," responded Dr. Donna Campbell, a medical director, in an attempt to set herself apart from the other two candidates as an outsider.
Meanwhile, Texas Railroad Commission Chair Elizabeth Ames Jones touted her experience with energy and the Eagle Ford Shale.
"I’ve served longer than any other woman as chairman of this great agency that oversees our great energy resources of this state,” said Jones.
Wentworth was asked by the panel about his controversial proposed bill that would have allowed guns on college campuses.
"I’m not sure I'll carry it again. Sometimes it’s just as well to let someone else handle a bill that you have handled a couple of sessions as I have done,” said Wentworth
"I’m not sure why he had such opposition, but a good leader with good legislation should be able to get it passed,” responded Campbell, who said she supported the bill.
Wentworth also went after Jones, challenging her residency in the district; an issue that may eventually be decided by the attorney general.
Wentworth contends that Jones is violating a constitutional provision that requires statewide officeholders to reside in Austin, which is not in the district.
"She’s got to pick. You don't have two permanent residents in the state of Texas," contended Wentworth.
"He is getting advice from his trial lawyers and I am getting advice from constitutional lawyers and we simply have a disagreement," said Jones.
This is the second debate in as many months for the three Republicans, with the primary date still in question due to redistricting.
