SAN ANTONIO -

A dog got some much needed surgery and is recuperating after she was found abandoned with two broken legs.

Veterinarians at South Texas Veterinary Specialists volunteered their services after learning of "Havana" the dog's plight.

"Our goal with surgery is to get them back into their normal position using some pins to stabilize them," Dr. Sarah Israel said. "Right now her knees are painful for her and if we can stop the movement of those bones, then she'll feel much more comfortable."

Veterinarians spent two hours surgically putting in permanent pins to secure Havana's leg bones. Follow-up visits and physical therapy will be needed because of Havana's young age.

"It's not a run of the mill surgery," Dr. Israel said. "It's a surgery where we have to be careful with her growth plates. She still has about six months of continued growing to do."

Havana will need four to six weeks to heal and Israel said she should be able to live out her life pain-free.

"There's a lot of families interested in helping her find her forever home and we're just grateful to help her get back to comfort," Israel said.

How Havana was injured is unknown and at this point there is no animal cruelty investigation. If you would like to adopt Havana, click here.
