The Bexar County Medical Examiner has identified the driver who was killed in a crash Wednesday morning on E. Sonterra Boulevard as Andres Cordero, 19.

His Facebook page cited his last name as Cabrera, however, the name friends said he went by.

It happened shortly before 6 a.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of E. Sonterra and Sigma Road, police said.

Police said they suspect Cordero was speeding when he lost control of his Ford Focus in the eastbound lanes and hit another car, bouncing off of it.

“We think maybe he over-steered, overcorrected, caused him to go into a skid and he hit the light pole and the fire hydrant," said Sgt. Tobe Whitley, of the San Antonio Police Department.

Cordero’s car came to rest on its side, with a huge dent in the driver’s side showing the impression of the fire hydrant.

Patrick Rodo, a close friend of Cabrera’s, said he was a great person, someone everybody wanted to be around.

“As big as he was, he was one of the most caring people you’ll ever meet,” said Rodo. “His nickname was ‘Teddy Bear.'"

Police said Cordero died on impact.

Inside the wreckage, police said they found a book bag containing what appeared to be college books and leading them to believe Cordero may have been a student.

The accident shut down eastbound Sonterra Boulevard for about two and a half hours.
