The name of a driver who was killed in a crash during the Monday morning rush hour, not far from San Antonio’s airport, has been released.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified him as Paul Castillo III, 36.
According to San Antonio police, Castillo had just exited Loop 410 West and was driving on a ramp that leads to Highway 281 and Airport Dr. when he lost control of his car before 8 a.m. Monday.
His gray Buick Century hit a concrete median, police said.
A second car, a black Nissan Altima, then T-boned Castillo’s car and caught fire, police said. That driver was able to climb out of the car and, at first, did not appear to be injured.
Later, that man was taken to a hospital, police said.
Castillo, meanwhile, suffered “major trauma,” according to Sgt. Carlos Garza. Paramedics attempted to revive him, but he died at the scene.
Garza said it’s possible Castillo had been speeding, although he could not estimate how fast he was going.
“He must've been going pretty fast,” he said. “We don't know that at this time. That's what the investigators are determining at this time."
It took investigators more than an hour to gather information at the scene, and for workers to clean up the debris.
The ramp leading from Loop 410 West to Highway 281 remained closed for the remainder of the morning commute.
