From their vehicle, Ana and Ernesto Guajardo saw a horrific accident Sunday.

"I happened to see a truck swerve. I saw that there was somebody down," Ernesto Guajardo said.

They immediately stopped and learned the person who had been hit was San Antonio police Officer Jonathon Esquivel.

Esquivel had stopped to help a stranded motorist when he was hit by a pickup truck.

"We didn't even think about it. We just jumped out of the car," Ana Guajardo said. "I just asked if he was OK, and he didn't respond."

Lionel Garcia, an EMT and firefighter with the Air Force, who was home for the weekend and just happened to be driving by at the time, also stopped to help.

"The thing that told me he was with us, that he was still in there, is something that will probably be etched in my mind," Garcia said. "He was crying."

Together, the three of them turned Esquivel over to clear his airways and kept him stable, likely buying him precious minutes until paramedics arrived.

Garcia said not stopping to help was never an option for him.

"It's part of my job. It would have been a disservice not to keep driving," Garcia said.
