Drivers warned to prepare for big traffic delay in downtown area
Downtown commuters asked to plan ahead due to increased traffic
Commuters traveling in and out of the downtown area on Thursday and Friday during morning and afternoon rush hours are advised to plan ahead.
There will be increased traffic volume expected in the area due to an all-day seminar being held at the Alamodome.
Commuters are encouraged to leave early to provide ample time to arrive at their destination and, if necessary, find parking in the downtown area.
About 4,000 to 6,000 additional vehicles are expected to be using local highways, primarily IH-37 and IH-35 in and out of downtown, as well as parking in public and private facilities near the Alamodome to attend the Success 2012 Seminar.
City traffic officials not only encourage commuters to allow for extra travel time, but to also consider riding the bus, carpooling or seeking alternate routes into the central business district.
The seminar begins at 8 a.m., but doors at the Alamodome will open at 6:45 a.m., meaning traffic congestion on area highways and streets is likely to begin earlier than normal. The seminar ends at 4:45 p.m. and increased traffic out of downtown is expected for the afternoon drive as well.
As many as 8,000 people are expected to attend each day of the seminar. They will utilize downtown public and private parking facilities near the dome, reducing the number of spaces normally available for citizens.
