A South side woman and her dog managed to escape an overnight fire in their home in the 100 block of Koepke Avenue.
A passerby noticed smoke pouring from the home shortly after 2:30 a.m. Thursday and woke up the woman who lives there.
She quickly got out safely, but San Antonio police officers had to detain her when she tried to go back into the home to rescue her dog.
Firefighters eventually got the animal out safely too. They said it appears a water heater is what caused the fire.
The back section of the home sustained heavy smoke damage. Firefighters said the woman, who is currently staying with a relative nearby, probably will not be able to return to the home due to medical reasons.
