Dwayne Schintzius, a former first-round pick of the San Antonio Spurs, died Sunday at the age of 43.
Schintzius had been battling a very rare form of leukemia that affects only three in 100,000 people annually in the U.S.
The 7-foot-2 center endured two bone marrow transplants since 2010 and was thought to have beaten the disease until complications began to develop.
Schintzius was drafted by the Spurs in 1990.
He is survived by his parents and a younger brother.
