WASHINGTON -

Federal prosecutors say two former U.S. military members from Texas, Grant E. Bibb of Eagle Pass and Paul Escobar of San Antonio, have been sentenced for their roles in an alleged scheme among several soldiers that rolled up $244,000 in fraudulent recruiting bonuses.

The Justice Department says Bibb was sentenced Thursday to a year and a day in prison, while Escobar received a six-month term and six months of community confinement. Both were sentenced to three years of supervised release.

Prosecutors say the 41-year-old Bibb and the 32-year-old Escobar admitted to participating in a plan to collect referral bonuses on enlistees who joined on their own.

The recruiting incentive program started in 2006 and offers upward of $2,000 for referrals who enlist. At least three other men have pleaded guilty in the case.
