The FBI released its annual crime statistics for cities nationwide on Friday, and for San Antonio, there’s both good and bad news.
According to the report, San Antonio continued its reduction in violent crimes such as rape and murder. In 2011, the city recorded 89 murders.
However, property crime continues to put San Antonio among the worst cities nationwide.
A total of 80,868 property crimes were recorded last year, with larceny, home and auto burglaries and thefts all included in the category.
Police said those numbers are pushed higher by the prevalence of auto burglaries in San Antonio, something experts say is largely a preventable crime.
“Keep valuable items out of sight, if in your car at all,” said Eddie Gonzales, KSAT’s crime specialist and a retired SAPD officer.
Gonzales called car burglary an epidemic in San Antonio, but said most thieves are just opportunists.
“I’ve interviewed a lot of car thieves before, and 99 percent of them will say they only broke in because something of value caught their eye,” said Gonzales.
