Southwest Bexar County resident Veronica Guerrero, 28, will not be facing any charges after she accidentally ran over her own son, Manny Martinez, 2, outside their home on Senior Road, sheriff’s investigators said.
The deadly accident happened just before 7 a.m. Wednesday in the driveway of the home located outside the Somerset city limits.
Lt. Dennis Casillas said the toddler and Guerrero’s 26-year-old sister, Maria Guerrero, were standing outside the home, waving goodbye as she drove off for work in her Ford F-250 pickup.
"The son broke free from the hand and made a run for the mom's vehicle as she was backing out,” Casillas said. “The child ran around the back side of the vehicle, and the mom, unknowingly, as she was approaching this gate, accidentally ran over this child.”
Casillas said Manny had made his way to the front passengers side of the truck where the front wheel rolled over him. His mother didn’t realize what had happened until she got out to open her front gate, he said.
“She heard her sister screaming,” Casillas said. “Apparently there are some uneven areas in the driveway and she thought that’s what she hit when she rolled over him.”
An ambulance called to the scene left without a patient several hours later. A medical helicopter that had landed in the middle of Loop 1604 and was on standby also was sent away empty.
Family members continued to arrive at the home after the tragedy, and stood by sobbing and hugging each other.
Although sheriff’s detectives conducted an investigation, they did not expect to find any reason to charge anyone.
"It appears right now that it was an accident. Very unfortunate," Casillas said.
