SAN ANTONIO -

Robert Esquivel, 23, was killed early Sunday morning when he was run over by an emergency vehicle that had been dispatched to help him.

"They went to go save his life and they took it away," said Maria Salas, Robert's younger sister.

Esquivel went to a party Saturday night with Salas' husband in south west Bexar county but left the party later that night.

A 911 call came out around 6 a.m. Sunday morning for a man lying on the side of the road near the 11000 block of Kelly.

A two-man crew with Emergency Services District 5 was dispatched and began searching for him on the dark, foggy road.

According to ESD 5 Chief Kevin Aulds, the driver came around a bend and saw Esquivel laying in the middle of the road parallel to the yellow dividing line but couldn't stop in time, driving over him.

"It is a big accident," said Salas. "I'm not trying to blame somebody but it is the fire truck's fault. Honestly, it is."

Aulds said both men in the vehicle were placed on administrative leave and the truck has been taken out of service as the Bexar County Sheriff's Office investigates.

After Esquivel's family hadn't heard from him by Sunday afternoon, many of them traveled to the accident scene after they heard someone was killed on the road.

They eventually got through to the medical examiner's office and their suspicions were confirmed Monday afternoon.

Salas said the family plans to set out collection jars at local convenience stores as well as sell homemade cookies to help pay for funeral expenses.

"We'll miss my brother," said Salas. "We'll always love him and he won't be forgotten. He won't."
