A family of seven survived a near-tragic accident Sunday when their sports utility vehicle flipped over on the highway.
It happened at 11:30 a.m. on I-10.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, two parents and five children, ranging from 4-months to 8-years-old, were taken to University Hospital.
One of the victims, a 4-year-old girl, was air-lifted to the hospital.
Accident investigators said the family’s Ford Excursion was travelling westbound on I-10 when the treads on one of the rear tires separated.
The SUV swerved, causing the driver to over-correct as they tried to regain control of the vehicle, authorities said. That caused the car to roll over on its side.
Investigators said everyone in the car was wearing their seatbelt. Still, the 4-year-old girl was ejected from the vehicle
Paul Berry with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said the 4-year-old girl was responsive, squeezing hands and answering questions from paramedics. But out of an abundance of caution, paramedics decided to take her to University Hospital via AirLIFE, Berry said.
Officials said they expect the 4-year-old girl to be okay. The rest of the family suffered minor injuries and were brought to the hospital here for precautionary reasons.
