SAN ANTONIO -

Community leaders say they are a step closer to finishing the Mission Reach project on the far South Side.

Commissioner Sergio "Chico" Rodriguez said Wednesday evening they are now on the last leg of the project at Mission Espada, and are preparing to finish up improvements on the San Antonio River.

Rodriguez said the project will bring the area back to its historical state, bring more people to the missions and make an impact on economic development.

"We're real excited how the river is coming. It's really beautiful. Bringing it back to its natural state, to what it used to be. So we're really excited about that right now," Rodriguez said.

County leaders will host a ribbon cutting Monday on Mission Road that kicks off the use of the hiking and biking on that trail. The project is expected to be completed no later than August 2013, officials said.
