Fire breaks out at abandoned church on near NW Side

Neighbors say homeless person possibly living in abandoned church on West Poplar at Calaveras

SAN ANTONIO -

A fire broke out at an abandoned church on the near Northwest Side late Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the 2200 block of West Poplar at Calaveras just before midnight Tuesday.

Investigators said no utilities were connected to the boarded-up building, and neighbors say a homeless person may have been staying there.

Fire crews say the building mostly suffered smoke damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
