Fire destroys San Antonio area wedding venue, dream home seen on TV
'The Swanderosa' near Helotes goes up in flames, no injuries reported
The cause of the fire at the Swanderosa estate early Wednesday morning remains under investigation by the fire marshal's office.
The 7500 square foot estate caught fire just after 1 a.m. It took fire crews nearly 3 hours to extinguish the fire.
Fortunately, the Swan family and their dog made it out safely. Tommy Swan said he was asleep when the fire broke out.
"Before I knew it, half the house and then as soon as half the house was gone, the rest was gone," said Swan who tried to put the blaze out with a fire extinguisher.
The fire is a big blow to the family. It comes just one month after they lost their mother to cancer.
"It's much more than just a home, we called it 'the Swanderosa' because it was a gathering place not just for our family, but families all over the city to celebrate the happiest days of their life," said Ashley Swan.
Swan said with the estate pretty much gone, she said her father will have nothing tangible to remember their mother by.
"At least he had this place to remember her by, and now it's gone," said Swan, who rushed out to the house minutes after the fire started.
Longtime neighbor Paul Sheel hopes the family will rebuild their estate. He said it's a terrible tragedy and that the family is a staple in the community.
On the Swanderosa Facebook page, they wrote they will be in contact with all future weddings that have been scheduled shortly.
