The Texas Department of Public Safety posted its list of the most stolen vehicles in Texas in 2012 -- and not surprisingly, pickups top the list once again in the Lone Star state.
Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge pickups represent the most stolen vehicles, followed by the ever-present Honda Civic and Chevy Tahoe to round out the top five.
KSAT Crime Specialist Gilbert De La Portilla said criminals usually look for older models.
"These guys just want to chop up the cars anyway for parts, so the older the parts are, the harder they are to find, and the more money they can make by selling them," said De La Portilla.
DPS said Texas drivers lost over $600 million in 2011 as a result of vehicle theft.
De La Portilla said the best way to avoid theft is to make vehicles "hard targets."
"Get an alarm, lock your doors (and) don't leave anything valuable visible inside," said De La Portilla.
He said criminals also use the stolen vehicles for smuggling operations and to commit other crimes like robbery and burglary.
