Some Fox Tech High School students had the chance to get out of the classroom Monday to spend a "day with the doctor" at University Hospital.
Some 24 students took part in the program, which is part of the Heart Learning Series, a program made available through a partnership with UT Health Science Center San Antonio, University Health System and the American Heart Association.
The students toured University Hospital's cardiology department to experience a day in the life of health care professionals.
All of the students are striving towards pursuing careers in the health profession.
"I want to be a pediatrician or study for cardiology," said Katlyn San Miguel, 16, a Fox Tech junior.
"I want to study something in pathology or cardiology," said Gabriela Ramirez, 17, a Fox Tech senior.
Through the Day with the Doctor program, they got a taste of what it's like.
After getting dressed in scrubs, they get to observe real professionals at work at the University Hospital Cardiology Department.
From a viewing room, they were able to see actual procedures being performed on patients, such as a heart catheterization procedure.
The reactions were mixed.
"You see ... everything they work with the machines (and) you're like, 'Oh my god, it's awesome,'" said said Gabriela Ramirez, 17, a Fox Tech senior
"It's crazy. I don't think I'd be able to do that," said Daisy Jimenez, a Fox Tech junior.
Adriana Loya, a teacher at Fox Tech and a professional nurse, said the program may not get every student interested in cardiology but it does help them figure out which area of medicine they'd like to pursue.
"I never had these programs of these experiences when I was younger and I think it would have definitely solidified where I wanted to be," said Loya.
The Day With the Doctor program series launched in Spring 2012 with students from Churchill High School.
Since then, it has been offered to different high school students throughout the area.
