Angie Schiess can trace her family tree to the original 15 families that established the city of San Antonio. It's those deep roots that convinced her and her sister to start up Sisters Grimm ghost tours offering nightly walking tours, and weekend dinner and ghost tours through some of the most haunted parts of downtown San Antonio.
The dinner tour starts in the Menger Hotel, home of some of the city's most famous ghosts, like former hotel maid Sallie White, who was murdered at the hotel by her husband in 1876.
"We believe that Sally has not given up on her daily duties," said Schiess, dressed in 19th century attire as she led the nightly tour. "Sally has been known to enter guests rooms day or night."
"I love San Antonio history and this is a really great historic tour and it's really fun," said San Antonio resident Lynnae Willette, who decided to take the tour along with family visiting from out of town.
The dinner tour usually runs on Friday and Saturday nights, but runs nightly from Oct. 26 through Oct. 31. During Halloween week, tour-goers are treated to a visit to the King Ranch suite, named for Captain Richard King, a frequent visitor to the Menger. He died in that suite after a long illness.
"I went online and read really good reviews about it, in fact, the majority were really good reviews, so we decided to do it," said Marilena Antonopoulos, who was visiting from New York City. "Plus it's Halloween week so we decided it'd be fun."
As part of the fun of the tour, visitors are encouraged to take pictures and share any that may have captured spirits. Willette said a few she took in the King suite showed some potential.
"Most of the photos were really clear and then there were a couple, we were in the King suite and they were really foggy and we can't explain it," said Willette.
The dinner tour leaves the Menger and continues to Alamo Plaza, then Main Plaza. The Sisters Grimm also have another tour that visits Alamo Plaza, Main Plaza and Military Plaza. That runs Monday through Saturday starting at 8:30 p.m.
