A man was found lying on the street with a gunshot wound near a southeast San Antonio bar early Thursday morning.
San Antonio police said 28-year-old Anthony Nichols had been shot in the stomach sometime around midnight, and was found across the street from Friendz Bar at the corner of S. New Braunfels and Lasses Boulevard.
Police interviewed bar patrons who said they saw Nichols inside playing pool and drinking a few moments before the shooting and nothing appeared out of the ordinary.
"Normally, there's some sort of confrontation then it spills outside, and that's when crimes like this take place. But in this particular case, it appears that the victim was just at the bar, left the bar for whatever reason and was shot," San Antonio police spokesman Officer Matt Porter.
Police reviewed surveillance video and noticed a light-colored sedan drive by Nichols in the parking lot and he collapsed a short time later.
"Investigators will look into (whether) that car played a role in the shooting or not, but at this point, it's too early to tell," Porter said.
Nichols was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition. No suspects have been identified in connection with the shooting.
"It can be frustrating for detectives. Again, they're handed this case and at this point, there's not a lot to go on. But they'll comb through all of the information," Porter said.
