H-E-B unveils new labels, newsletter to help San Antonio get healthy in 2013
"Good News" weekly newsletter to feature healthy recipes, coupons, shopping lists
H-E-B unveiled on Thursday a new nutrition labeling system and weekly newsletter aimed at helping customers adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle in 2013.
The weekly "Good News" newsletter will provide shoppers with recipes, shopping lists, and coupons for healthy foods.
"We want to be able to help our customers be able to make some good, healthy meals for their families," said H-E-B dietitian Lorena Kaplen.
The new labeling system provides an easy way to navigate store shelves to find healthy foods. The new shelf tags include icons indicating whether foods are heart healthy, low in saturated fat, good fiber sources, sugar-free, gluten free, or organic.
"Last year was all about low fat diets and gluten free diets," Kaplen said. "This year, 2013, is all about having a balanced diet, getting all the nutrients that you need and not just eliminating one nutrient, but having a balance of everything."
According to H-E-B, the tags have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
