My beautiful wife and I have been married for six years.
In 2011, we carefully decided to go through a private adoption. We were so excited and ready for a new child to be in our lives.
Sadly, the private adoption did not go as planned and the young woman decided to keep her child.
We were heartbroken and devastated because our dream of having a family was shattered.
That same night, I told my wife, “God has a plan for us. This wasn’t part of his plans.”
As hard as it was to accept, we slowly moved on with our lives.
In December 2011, we enrolled into the Foster to Adopt program with Child Protective Services. We completed the required courses and certifications and were certified to Foster/Adopt by the end of December.
Our caseworker, Rita, was so awesome and honest. She told us that since our criteria for a foster child was so specific, it would literally take months to find a match.
Jan. 18, 2012, will be a day I will never forget. That’s the day we were blessed with our first son.
We were always told not to get attached to a foster placement child because we wouldn’t know if it would be a permanent stay for them.
As soon as we saw him, we knew he would be ours. Life is good. We now had a 10-month old-boy in our home.
On June 8, 2012, my wife called me at work and told me I need to get home by 3 p.m. because they are delivering us another boy. That day, we were blessed with our second son.
2012 was a great year for my family. We adopted our sons on Dec. 7, 2012.
Some people say our sons are lucky to have us, but I say we are blessed to have our boys. If we didn’t have them, I probably would not have the courage to apply for the contest.
With this new spark in my life, I decided to make a stand for my health. I never had to be a role model for anyone before; I knew it was time for a drastic change.
I applied for the HEB Slimdown Showdown because I want to participate in my children’s lives; not to just watch them from the sidelines.
I want to show them what good nutrition is, how to make health choices, to be active, and to be respectful of others.
I want to learn how to safely lose weight and keep it off!
My family is fuel to succeed.
I want to thank HEB for giving me the chance to win my life back.
Many applied, but only 25 were chosen. I am truly blessed to be a part of this life changing program and I am going to make the best of it.
Although this is a contest, my ultimate prize is to make a healthy lifestyle change for the rest of my life and hopefully influence others along the way.
