Dolores Garcia admits shopping for healthy meals can be overwhelming in a store full of food, but she said she was up for the challenge because she was intent on keeping her New Year's resolution.
"I've lost weight on Weight Watchers and I've gained it back, so I said, 'OK, in the beginning of the year, let's start over,' so that's why I'm looking for healthy recipes," she said.
Her recent trip to HEB on S.W. Military Drive was made easier because of a new program called "Healthy at HEB." The goal is to help customers learn to make healthy, affordable meals.
New recipes will be unveiled twice a month, along with coupons for ingredients that will feed a family of four for less than $10.
On Wednesday morning, Lorena Kaplen, a registered dietitian with HEB, provided fresh samples of one of the recipes: spicy pork with pasta and green beans.
"You've got a balanced meal here," she said. "You've got lean proteins, you've got your whole grains and you've got vegetables."
Each of the meals are chef inspired and tweaked by dietitians, so they're well balanced, as well as low in sugar, fat and sodium.
Shannon Hernandez, an HEB spokesperson, said, "With the state of Texas facing the obesity epidemic that it is today, and just knowing the success that we've had with our own employees with Healthy Eating HEB, we felt that it was time to launch healthy eating for our customers as well."
Garcia said she enjoyed the sample and walked away with a new recipe and ingredients to cook a healthy meal for her and her husband.
