HELOTES, Texas -

Bloomberg BusinessWeek and Bloomberg Ratings search data from GreatSchools.org, the FBI, the U.S. Census Bureau and even the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to determine that Helotes, Texas, was the best place in the state to raise a family.

To those living in the city that was incorporated in 1981, however, it didn’t require all that.

Helotes has a long reputation as a great small town, and most of the controversy in the city stems from efforts to keep the bustling city from growing into anything else.

Helotes City Administrator Rick Schroeder says, “There was some hootin’ and hollerin’ in the offices back there,” upon hearing the news that the city had come out on top in the study.

He says Helotes can boast of many attributes, some of which point straight to it’s location.

It’s close to a big city, big-city shopping, and big-city family attractions.

“It’s a family friendly place. We have lots of parks, we’re close to a lot of the attractions, SeaWorld, Fiesta Texas, and a lot of shopping out there,” he said.

Bloomberg looked at 3,200 places nationwide with median family income of less than $115,866 and populations from 5,000 to 50,000.

One area where it came out on top is in the category of schools. GreatSchools gives Helotes a score of 9 out of 10.
