Homeless man found not guilty of murder
Juan Cavalos accused of beating fellow drifter to death in 2008
After deliberating for three hours, a jury in 437th District Court found Juan Cavalos, 57, not guilty of killing fellow drifter Cadido Estrada.
Estrada’s body was found under a Buena Vista street bridge in April of 2008. He had been beaten and kicked to death according to prosecutors.
During closing arguments in Cavalos’ murder trial on Thursday, his lawyer, Scott McCrum, said that the testimony of a state’s key witness, a homeless woman, was unreliable.
They said her story had changed several times since the murder and noted that the woman had a history of drug and alcohol abuse.
The jury had the option of considering lesser offenses of manslaughter and assault but rejected all charges.
